Detail information
Introduction of the Designer
CUBE-C is designed by Momo independently, after overcoming all kinds of difficulties in the process, one year later finally met with you. Momo originally majored in Fine Arts, but she was by chance exposed to the blueprint of UnrealEngine. Since then, she has stepped on the path of game produce. This game is made using UE4. It is a purely blueprint-made game. Besides, Momo is a loyal fan of games. She likes playing all kinds of original games, no matter what platform, domestic or foreign.
Making Process
Three purposes to achieve:
· Solving the dizziness of VR games, and attempting to make a VR game which is suitable for all ages;
· Making a refreshing and relaxing VR game in an open world rather than the commonly-seen FPS or Horror games;
· At the beginning, I could not found a VR game which can be playing long enough. Therefore, I designed a brand-new way of playing based on my own experience. My purpose was to make the VR game playing complete and unique, not just sight-seeing and shooting.
Making Plan
In November 2016, I started designing a game which should be interesting than other VR games. Four small games were designed by me, including Ski Track, Pile Up, Room Puzzle and Cube World.
At that time, few people are willing to make VR games, not to mention an entirely original game. Few could understand your design purpose and means of playing. So from the very beginning, I could not build a suitable team. Of course, the greatest challenge I am facing was lack of adequate fund support.
(The image shows my planning in 2016. In fact, the VR games similar to “Ski Track” have already been realized by foreign companies in late 2017. I think this is a good idea, but my abilities are too limited to fulfill the idea.)
So I bought myself a set of HTV VIVE and a 1070 display card, installed on a PC I bought two years ago and began to create games at home with less than 2 square meters of space.
The whole production process is very painful. Making VR games has been feeling like a touch of the stones try across the river. What increases the difficulty of the game making, is that the means of playing is totally different from the traditional one. On the one hand, VR can usually cause baffling bugs, which hard to find any solution. On the other hand, brand-new means of playing calls for step-by-step accumulation of experience and summary of a complete set of rules. (Before game making, there should be a detailed plan. However, there are still many plans which cannot be realized.)
What I have experienced ...
The hardest part of the whole making process was that I am alone. If I had any puzzles, no one could give me an answer, and no one to discuss with. Often some methods are not feasible, then, I might have to start again.
What makes matters worse is, I experienced three hard drive failure!!
In the third time, the 3T hard disc destroyed my materials at a visible speed day by day. Finally, 80G of core documents from the game project was lost.
Here, I am still grateful to Kamrann, an expert on the forum of UE4. He answered my question and helped me test the whole system manually. With his help, I could learn which documents were still useful and which were already lost. He greatly reduced my losses, hard to find a word to express my gratitude. Even so, I spent nearly a month to restore all documents. Besides, there are friends from Germany, Ruben enthusiastic help me find fault, taught me a lot of things.
Nearly Accomplished
When a game is almost accomplished, it does not mean the end but a start. During the development period, I just needed my program to be operable and my game to be playable. At this period, I had a great number of affairs to handle, including game details, game optimization, player’s experience, game publishing, game publicity, etc.
Everything at this period, either I could do or I could not, either I liked or I did not like, should be accomplished by myself, because no one knew what I want and what I was doing(Because of it a VR game, it is difficult to spread). I typed word by word about introduction and publicity by myself.
Very grateful is that I still gaining the support of some friends, including:
- Zyfs (VR Technical Support)
- OH MY GOD (a 3D Art expert)
- Sponge eye eye (a Illustration expert)
Thanks to these partners for their unpaid support, as well as the others who have been in my group for help, as well as
- 51Kitty (a Fine model 3D Art)
Finally, the game could be Launched.
When it came to the stage of launching, all things slowed down. There was a lot to be desired, including modification the introduction and adjust the game. Everything moved ahead extremely slow, and the game showed many bugs in the final stage. (VR project sometime need the latest version of the game engine. Then, change of the version might mean unexpected new bugs.) Therefore, the game launch was postponed nearly three months.
Eventually, my game passed the final review on Steam. Though I had anxiously hoped that my game could pass the review at an earlier date, a final pass had otherwise aroused uneasy feelings in me. I was afraid that my game could not bring favorable experience for players. (In fact, I attempted to make some free small games at the beginning, but because the VR development process was too painful. In the end, I found this basically impossible)
To conclude, the game making process was a period contributing to both my knowledge and development experience. I really hope that the game can bring fun to all players!
The release is near the end of the year, also an Early Access version, so I am not making the game pre-sale discounted, Please wait until a big discount at Winter, I hope can get more support!
